"Does anyone wonder why you see a person with shoulder plates every day?" -Hope.
Shoulder plates are a recurring theme in Chrome's Show of Chromeyness, and they are apparently worn by many characters. According to the series creator, they have no darker meaning, they're just for protection. As to why they appear so much was an accident on the creator's part.

- Unlike real shoulder plates, these ones extend outwards to the wearer's left and right.
- Even though Lord Zorgu has no armor, he has the plates anyways as a part of his skeletal system.
